The BSDGB offers a broad range of qualifications covering conflict management, personal safety, self defence, and handling violence and aggression at work examining every angle of personal safety training including:
The qualifications are delivered on a flexible basis through comprehensive distance learning materials, backed up by optional face-to-face sessions. All participants are provided with support by qualified tutors.
Participants with relevant experience or knowledge of specific units will be able to move immediately on to the assessment process.
The Advanced Certificate in the Teaching of Conflict Management, Personal Safety and Self Defence (the “Advanced Certificate”) equips instructors and trainers with the skills and knowledge to teach conflict management, personal safety, physical intervention (restraints) and self defence skills to a variety of groups and individuals. The BSDGB is an authorised supplier to many organisations including the Home Office in relation to its qualifications for self-defence and physical restraint trainers.
Initially accredited through the Open College Network and funded through the then Further Education Funding Council (FEFC), the Advanced Certificate is now available directly through the BSDGB.
The Advanced Certificate has been designed to offer maximum flexibility through “distance learning” and is suitable for people with previous experience in these disciplines. On-line tutorial assistance is included and optional face-to-face sessions can be provided if required. All materials are provided. These materials, extending to more than 700 pages over 6 manuals, will also prove invaluable in your teaching and can be personalised for hand-outs for your own students. You will be able to work at your own pace through the programme and can contact your tutor at the BSDGB whenever required for explanation or discussion of any points contained within the learning materials.
All instructors and trainers wishing to qualify for the Advanced Certificate will be required to undertake the following mandatory units:
TM250
The law relating to physical interventions (two credits) covering all the legal issues relating to the subject, including the use of force, risk assessments and the legal duties of the employer.TM251
The management of confrontation (two credits) dealing with the recognition of potential conflict, what triggers it, and how to prevent it from escalating into actual violence.TM252
Theories of personal safety and self protection (one credit) covering issues relating to personal safety in the home, in private and public transport, on the streets, and in crowded areas.TM253
Teaching adults (one credit) covering the planning and delivery of teaching to adults, the use and evaluation of teaching aids, and the demonstration of a range of teaching methods.
In addition, each student must also undertake at least one of the following option units:
TE350
The handling of violence and aggression at work (three credits) covering the causes of violence in the workplace; dealing with them satisfactorily to prevent the escalation into actual violence; handling bullying and harassment; and the legal duties of the employer.TE351
Practical self protection, physical intervention and control & restraint (two credits) covering practical self defence techniques and the controlling and restraining of violent or potentially violent persons.TR450
Police self defence and control & restraint (two credits) covering the techniques currently taught to police officers, together with those modifications and improvements recommended by the BSDGB.Please note that Unit TR450 is restricted to police instructors who must include proof of their qualification with their booking form.
Each credit is the equivalent of thirty study hours, although students are free to work at their own pace and to spend as much or as little time on each unit as needed.
The Advanced Certificate is delivered by “distance learning” supported by optional face-to-face sessions. Students will receive a comprehensive pack of study materials, incorporating all necessary content, exercises and case studies (with answers), and assignments. Course assignments will be sent by students to BSDGB head office, where they will be assessed and sent back to the students with feedback and comments. All students work at their own pace through the programme and can contact tutors at the BSDGB whenever required for explanation or discussion of any points contained within the learning materials.
As soon as a student feels confident that they have completed and understood the learning materials they can register for formal assessment. Formal assessment will consist of a mixture of role play, practical assessment, or written examination papers containing multiple choice questions and short answer questions, dependent on the units chosen. Course assignments contribute towards the achievement of all qualifications.
The charge for the programme for UK-resident eligible participants is £675.00 per person including registration, certification costs, examination fees and all programme materials. Attendance at optional face-to-face sessions is charged at an additional amount, depending on location. All prices include VAT where appropriate.
All instructors who achieve the Advanced Certificate will be approved by the BSDGB to deliver some or all of the following BSDGB qualifications to individual students and organisations.
*Please note that this Award is restricted to police personnel who must provide proof of eligibility before being accepted for study.
All participants for the Advanced Certificate should have a good general education. Previous teaching experience and/or achievement of any of the BSDGB qualifications would provide a useful entry point for this qualification.

The British Self Defence Governing Body offers four Awards for end-users exclusively through its qualified instructors. The Awards are suitable for any individual or organisation wishing to gain a better understanding of the theories and/or practice of self protection and thereby reduce the risk of becoming a victim of violence or aggression.
The Award in the Theory and Practice of Self Protection consists of two units of two credits (a total of 120 study hours) each:
Unit E252 – Theories and law relating to personal safety and self protection – covers issues relating to personal safety in the home, in private and public transport, on the streets, and in crowded areas, together with a summary of the legal issues relating to self protection.
Unit E351 – Practical self protection and control & restraint – covers a range of practical self-defence techniques and the controlling and restraining of violent or potentially violent persons.
The Award in the Management of Confrontation consists of one unit of two credits (or sixty study hours):
Unit E251 – The management of confrontation – covering the recognition of conflict and confrontation, what triggers it, how to resolve it and how to prevent it from escalating into actual violence.
The Award in the Handling of Violence and Aggression at Work consists of one unit of two credits (or sixty study hours):
Unit E350 – The handling of violence and aggression at work – covers the causes of violence and aggression in the workplace; dealing with them satisfactorily to prevent the escalation into actual violence; handling bullying and harassment; and the legal duties of the employer.
The Award in Police Self Defence and Control and Restraint consists of one unit of two credits (or sixty study hours):
Unit ER450 – Police self defence and control & restraint – covers the techniques currently taught to police officers, together with those modifications and improvements recommended by the BSDGB.
This award is restricted to police personnel only.
Students will receive a comprehensive pack of study materials, incorporating all necessary content, exercises and case studies (with answers), and assignments. Course assignments will be sent by students to BSDGB head office, where they will be assessed and sent back to the students with feedback and comments. All students work at their own pace through the programme and can contact tutors at the BSDGB whenever required for explanation or discussion of any points contained within the learning materials.
